STEPS
This was the first room I ever finished in our house. Now five years later, my daughter was ready for something more “her.” The pink and white color scheme felt a little too little-girl, so we set out to give it a more grown-up, purple-forward vibe without changing the bones of the room.
We looked through a ton of swatches together and landed on Lavender Escape 4002-7B for the walls. It’s a soft lavender that feels calm but still playful. For the trim, doors, and baseboards, I used Positively Purple 4002-8B, a deeper coordinating shade that gave the room a bold contrast without feeling too dark.
I picked up one gallon of Valspar® Ultra Interior Paint + Primer in an eggshell finish for the walls and one gallon of Valspar® Signature Interior Paint + Primer in semi-gloss for the trim. Signature’s ScuffShield™ Technology makes it ideal for high-touch areas. I also grabbed painter’s tape and Valspar® Walls, Ceilings & Trim 6-Piece Knit Roller Kit, which includes a paint brush, smooth surface roller, paint tray, and a drop cloth.
After clearing out the furniture and decor, I wiped down every paintable surface including walls, doors, baseboards, and trim. Especially in a kid’s room, sticky fingerprints and smudges build up fast. Starting with clean surfaces makes all the difference.
I used 2-inch painter’s tape to mask the ceiling line, windows, and outlets. I also removed the outlet and switch covers for a cleaner finish. Anything I didn’t want painted got taped.
I cut in around the edges using a trim brush, then rolled on my first coat of Lavender Escape 4002-7B. Valspar® Ultra Interior Paint + Primer gives great coverage and goes on smooth, making it ideal for a project like this where you want high impact fast.
Once the walls dried, I used Valspar® Signature Interior Paint + Primer in Positively Purple 4002-8B on the baseboards, door, and trim. That ScuffShield™ Technology is clutch in a kid’s room, and the semi-gloss finish gave everything a nice, crisp contrast.
Once dry to the touch, I carefully removed the tape at a 45-degree angle. A few quick touch-ups with a fine brush cleaned up any minor imperfections and gave me those sharp edges I love.
With the painting done, I brought in a few new pieces like a vanity with glam lights, empowering artwork, and a canopy that totally stole the show. The result is a room that feels way more “tween” and totally her.
